Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, has addressed concerns regarding his age ahead of the 2027 presidential election, questioning critics who suggest that he is too old for effective leadership. In an interview with BBC Hausa, he noted that by the time of the election, he would be close to 80, but challenged the notion that his age would impair his capabilities. He countered by referencing President Bola Tinubu’s age, implying that citizens have previously voted for older candidates.

As Atiku gears up for the upcoming election, he is working to unite opposition politicians against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), rebutting accusations that he is a hindrance to this coalition. He emphasized his role as the initiator of the alliance, despite some disagreements among key figures, such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who have distanced themselves from the collaboration. Atiku expressed optimism for possible reunification among opposition leaders before the election.

Additionally, Atiku criticized the Federal Government’s management of the petrol subsidy removal, expressing concern over the lack of transparency regarding the funds that were intended to alleviate poverty and foster development. He stated that while he does not oppose the subsidy’s removal, he questions the handling of the proceeds and asserted that if elected, he would reinstate the subsidy and demand accountability from those who misappropriated the funds. He believed that proper management of the savings could have mitigated the current hardships faced by Nigerians.

Furthermore, he expressed skepticism regarding peace accords involving opposition parties, questioning why the ruling government is often excluded from such agreements. He considers these arrangements ineffective if the incumbents are not involved in the discussions. Atiku’s comments reflect his critical perspective on both his opponents and the government’s policies as he prepares for a competitive election season.
