At 34 years old, le Clos contributed to South Africa’s bronze medal finish in the men’s 4×100 medley relay, adding to his previous two medals in the 2026 Games—silver in the mixed 4×100 medley and bronze in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay.

His impressive tally now comprises seven golds, five silvers, and nine bronzes, accumulated over five Commonwealth Games since his debut in Delhi in 2010, where he won five medals at just 18 years old. He followed this with a stellar performance in Glasgow in 2014, where he earned seven medals, then achieved five more at the Gold Coast in 2018 and one in Birmingham in 2022.

Reflecting on his recent successes, le Clos expressed strong emotions, noting that the initial medals in Glasgow 2026 were particularly significant: “It was emotional, but I think those first two medals were just a little bit more just because I had to get over the hump.” He acknowledged the collective effort of his teammates, who motivated each other by saying, “we’re doing this for Chad” before their races, emphasizing the emotional support he receives from his team.

In addition to his Commonwealth Games accolades, le Clos is also renowned as an Olympic champion, notably stunning the world by defeating legendary swimmer Michael Phelps by 0.05 seconds to win the 200-metre butterfly gold at the 2012 London Olympics. At that time, Phelps was a 14-time Olympic champion and had not lost in that event since 2001.

Le Clos has continued to compete at the Olympic level, securing medals in Rio 2016 and participating in subsequent Games in Tokyo and Paris. With his sights set on qualifying for a fifth Olympics in Los Angeles in two years, he remains a prominent figure in the world of competitive swimming.
