The announcement was made by the Chairman of the NDC National Screening Committee, Sam Egwu, in a video shared through the party’s official X account on Wednesday.
Obi underwent the screening exercise in Abuja on Tuesday, where the committee reviewed his qualifications and eligibility for the contest.
According to Egwu, the committee confirmed that Obi met all constitutional and legal requirements needed to contest for the presidency under the party platform.
“This serves as confirmation that His Excellency Peter Obi has successfully passed the screening process conducted by the National Screening Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. After reviewing all relevant documents and ensuring compliance with the party constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he is hereby cleared to contest in the party’s presidential primary for the 2027 election,” Egwu stated.
Reacting through his official X account, Obi disclosed that the screening process lasted for more than two and a half hours.
He explained that members of the committee carefully examined his educational qualifications, NYSC documents, age declarations and other credentials.
“On May 19 in Abuja, I participated in the presidential screening organised by our party. The process lasted over two and a half hours, during which my documents, including degree certificates and NYSC credentials, were thoroughly reviewed,” Obi wrote.
He added that he was also questioned about his plans and vision for Nigeria if elected president.
“I addressed questions concerning the kind of leadership Nigeria urgently needs and my vision for building a better nation,” he said.
Obi also praised the screening committee and the party leadership for conducting what he described as a transparent and credible exercise.
“I appreciate the professionalism displayed by the screening committee led by former governor Sam Egwu. I also commend the party leadership for maintaining due democratic process,” he added.
The development comes as political parties continue consultations and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with coalition discussions and party primaries already gaining momentum.
