Due to the ongoing detention of teachers and students who have been kidnapped in the state’s Oriire Local Government Area, the Nigeria Union of Teachers has ordered all public elementary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to go on an indefinite strike starting today, Monday, June 1, 2026.

After 46 students and their teachers were kidnapped by suspected terrorists in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota areas, worries about the safety of educators and students have grown.

In a joint statement signed by the union’s secretary, Salami Olukayode, and chairman of the Oyo State Wing, Hassan Fatai, the NUT claimed that the victims’ ongoing detention has increased tension in the impacted communities, discouraged school attendance, and caused fear and anxiety among teachers.
The union stated that the goal of the industrial action is to make government officials and security organizations aware of the pressing need to step up efforts to ensure the safe release of the kidnapped teachers and students.

It instructed all teachers in the state’s public elementary and secondary schools to adhere completely to the strike action and stay at home until further instructions were given.
