Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigerian Democratic Party in 2027 and former governor of Anambra State, expressed his willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for Nigeria in a recent interview. During the Black Box interview on Nevon HQ with journalist Rufai Oseni, he emphasized that genuine leadership requires selflessness, especially amid the country’s escalating security crisis. When questioned about rescuing kidnapped schoolchildren and addressing violence against teachers and military personnel, Obi did not present specific strategies but stressed the importance of commitment and decisive leadership.
Obi reflected on his tenure as governor, citing how he effectively fought crime in Anambra by forcing notorious kidnappers out of the state. He recalled a prominent kidnapper named Vance, who confirmed that criminal activities became increasingly difficult during his administration. Obi stated, “One government. It’s either I’m in charge or they’re in charge. One person must be in charge.” He underscored the necessity of declaring a war on insecurity, asserting that any leader should be prepared to die for their country. “If you’re not ready to die, go home,” he declared, affirming his readiness to return and fight for Nigeria regardless of circumstances.
His comments come against a backdrop of rampant banditry, kidnappings, and assaults on educational institutions and security forces. In a notable incident in May, 40 students and teachers were kidnapped in Orire Local Government Area, resulting in one teacher’s death and others still detained. Obi also touched on the serious implications of non-state actors undermining state authority, yet remained optimistic about the potential for committed leadership to restore Nigeria’s military prestige, recalling instances where Nigerian troops contributed to global peacekeeping efforts. Ultimately, he contended that the will to confront these security challenges is more critical than elaborating on detailed operational plans.
