In an article on Truth Social, Trump compared the theft of America’s film industry to “stealing candy from a baby” and accused foreign nations of doing so. He did not, however, provide information about the policy’s implementation or the legal basis for its enforcement.

Analysts caution that such a move would cause instability throughout the global entertainment sector, while Hollywood companies, including Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Skydance, Netflix, and Comcast, have not yet responded.

According to industry analysts, since modern film production relies on worldwide collaborations and foreign filming hubs in nations like Canada, the UK, and Australia, expenses will probably increase for both studios and consumers.

According to the Motion Picture Association, the U.S. film business has historically profited from its international reach, with exports totaling $22.6 billion in 2023 and a trade surplus of $15.3 billion. When Trump first proposed tariffs in May, entertainment guilds and unions asked him to back tax breaks for domestic production instead, citing the potential harm that new trade restrictions could do to American workers involved in foreign film ventures.
