The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the petrol subsidy, backing the administration’s position on the controversial policy.

Wike’s remarks come amid continued public debate over the economic impact of subsidy removal, which has contributed to higher petrol prices and increased transportation and living costs for many Nigerians.

The Tinubu administration announced the end of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, arguing that the policy placed a heavy financial burden on government revenue and diverted funds that could be used for infrastructure, healthcare, education and other public services.

Supporters of the decision have maintained that removing the subsidy would free up resources for national development and reduce the government’s dependence on borrowing to finance subsidy payments.

However, critics have raised concerns about the immediate hardship faced by households and businesses, particularly as higher fuel prices have affected transportation, food distribution and the general cost of living.

Wike’s defence adds to the ongoing national discussion about the government’s economic reforms and the measures needed to cushion their effects on ordinary Nigerians.

As the debate continues, attention remains on how effectively the government can translate the expected savings from subsidy removal into tangible improvements in public services, economic opportunities and living standards.
