Festus Onigbinde, a former national team coach who guided Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, passed away. The Super Eagles have been grieving his loss.
Bolade Adesuyi signed a WhatsApp message confirming Onigbinde’s death on Monday. Onigbinde turned 88 on March 5.
“Your soul will rest perfectly in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ,” the family prayed, describing him as “a respected football figure and community leader.”
The Super Eagles honored the late coach in a statement released on Tuesday via X.
“In light of Festus Adegboyega Onigbinde’s demise, we offer our condolences to his family. A genuine servant of Nigerian football and a recognized leader. “Coach, rest in peace,” the team said.
