Wayne Rooney is reportedly interested in taking over at Southampton, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard also thought to be keen. Nathan Jones was sacked on Sunday after just eight Premier League games in charge following his takeover from Ralph Hasenhuttl in November, leaving the Welshman with Southampton rock bottom of the Premier League. Jesse Marsch remains the odds-on favourite to succeed Jones, while Mauricio Pochettino is on the shortlist for a dramatic return to the south coast with Marcelo Gallardo, Nuno Espirito Santo, Sam Allardyce and Ivan Juric among the other candidates. Rooney may be deemed too inexperienced to take on the challenge of a Premier League relegation battle at this early stage of his managerial career, but he would be the youngest manager currently working in the Premier League and would replace Gary O’Neil as the youngest manager.
