It’s a moment many residents have waited years to see: passengers can now fly straight from Ibadan to London.

International operations officially begin Wednesday at the newly upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport, marking the city’s first direct long-haul connection outside Nigeria. Additional departures are scheduled for February 23, 24 and 25, according to airport sources.

For decades, travelers from Ibadan and surrounding states have had little choice but to make the often stressful journey to Lagos before boarding international flights. The new route changes that. By offering a direct link to London, the service reduces dependence on Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub and spares many passengers hours on the road.

The impact stretches beyond Oyo State. Residents of Osun, Ogun, Kwara and parts of Ondo states, who frequently travel to the United Kingdom for business, education and family visits, now have an option closer to home.

Officials say recent upgrades brought the airport in line with international standards, expanding its capacity to handle long-haul aircraft and international passenger processing. The improvements are part of broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure and position Ibadan as a more competitive commercial center.

Aviation analysts describe the London route as a strategic move, pointing to the strong travel ties between southwestern Nigeria and the UK, home to a large Nigerian diaspora. They say improved connectivity could encourage investment, boost tourism and deepen trade links.

While full details, including flight frequency, ticket pricing and the operating airline are expected to be announced soon, the symbolism of the inaugural takeoff is already resonating.

For many in Ibadan, it is more than a new flight path. It’s a sign that the city is stepping into a bigger role on Nigeria’s aviation map, and connecting more directly to the world.
