In an October 13 solidarity letter that he personally signed and sent to Sowore, Wabara stated his complete support for the campaign that human rights advocate and 2023 African Action Congress presidential contender Omoyele Sowore started calling for Kanu’s release.
The former Senate President stated in the letter he posted on his X handle on Wednesday that he would have loved to be able to attend the march in person but is now on a medical trip abroad.
The head of the Peoples Democratic Party also praised Sowore and everyone advocating for the October 20 march for their bravery in standing up to injustice.
“I have been informed about the planned protest on October 20th, calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the letter stated. I want to thank you and everyone else who keeps fighting for justice and equity in our nation.
Regretfully, I will not be able to personally join you on that day because I am abroad of the nation.
But know that I stand with you in spirit and fully back any nonviolent endeavor to achieve justice and national unity. I hope the outing is successful and peaceful for you and everyone else.
He said that he has reached out to a number of well-known Igbo leaders, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Dr. Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, and Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to join the campaign.
Dr. @alexottiofr, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo @CCSoludo, and Mr. @PeterObi (via his team) are the people I have attempted to contact directly today. Neither Soludo nor Alex Otti answered my calls or messages. Despite the fact that Mr. @PeterObi is currently traveling, they pledged to inform him of our preparations.
Through his team, I also contacted Alhaji @Atiku, and Senator @SenatorAbaribe promised to give me a call back. Obinna Agwuocha of the House of Representatives and I had a conversation. He was supportive and open.
According to the members of the Abia State House of Assembly, they intend to visit London the following week before going straight back to Abuja to take additional action. Not expecting a “placard” protest, they stated that they plan to first visit the Attorney General of the Federation to file a complaint. Since his questionable extradition from Kenya and subsequent re-arrest in 2021, Kanu has remained under the custody of the Department of State Services.
The Federal Government has not complied with several court orders directing his release, including one from the Court of Appeal in October 2022 that cleared him of all charges and freed him on the grounds that his extradition was illegal under international law.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has charged the IPOB leader with inciting, treasonous crime, and terrorism-related offenses, all of which he has repeatedly denied.
