The family of the late President Muhammadu Buhari has conveyed their sincere gratitude to Nigerians worldwide, President Bola Tinubu, and First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu for the outpouring of solidarity that followed Buhari’s passing.
On behalf of the late president’s family, the Buhari family’s most senior member, Malam Mamman Daura, expressed thanks in a statement signed by Buhari’s media adviser, Garba Shehu, on Sunday.
It is incredibly reassuring to have the support of the President and Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who traveled to the United Kingdom and spent the days he and the ministers were in Daura during the time of sorrow. All of us now have the fortitude to confront this loss because of these.
According to a portion of the statement, “We are deeply grateful to the President for his thoughtful gestures in declaring a public holiday and renaming the University of Maiduguri after Buhari.”
The family also thanked international leaders for their condolence messages.
We also want to express our gratitude to the presidents of several nations who visited us in person, sent representatives, wrote letters, or called us personally to offer their condolences. Those of King Charles III of England, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General, the Chairman of the African Union, the Committee of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS countries, and our former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, were particularly noteworthy, it went on.
The family described Buhari’s passing as “an irreparable loss” and said the outpouring of support had given them courage.
“The general response and kind expressions give us the strength to cope with the loss of our esteemed family member and former leader of the country,” the statement continued, adding that “Muhammadu Buhari’s demise is an irreparable loss, and its pain is beyond words.”
Governors, previous political figures, and other dignitaries who paid their respects were acknowledged by the family.
Senior government officials, traditional leaders, and previous cabinet members were also recognized.
For their participation in these events and consoling remarks, we sincerely thank the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and his predecessor, Boss Mustapha; the current Chief of Staff, Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila, and his predecessor, Professor Ibrahim Gambari; and the cabinet members from both administrations.
The Sultan of Sokoto, the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Gwandu, the host emirs of Katsina and Daura, and other traditional leaders from throughout Nigeria and the neighboring countries who either came in person or sent representatives thrilled us with their incredible gestures.
The statement went on to say, “We have been honored by the large turnout of religious leaders—Islamic, Christian, and of other faiths—community leaders, women, youth, and politicians of various leanings whose surge in Daura was both challenging and reassuring.”
The message also thanked the country’s business titans, media, security agencies, and civil officials for their unity.
Additionally, the family in Daura is expressing gratitude to the media, civil society, community organizations and associations, permanent secretaries, police and military commanders, security and intelligence officials, and rank-and-file civil servants.
The family thanks Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Isyaka Rabi’u, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu, the country’s business heavyweights who came to Daura.
Additionally, we would want to express our gratitude to all of Nigeria’s citizens as well as those of other countries represented by their delegations there.
