Aderonke Kale, born in 1939, joined the Nigerian Army in 1972 and made history as the first female general in 1990. She served as the Director of Army Public Relations and the first female Commander of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps. Kale retired from the Army in 1997 and was married to Professor Oladele Kale. She is the mother of five sons, including Yemi Kale, who became the Statistician-General of Nigeria. In 2011, the female hall of residence at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) was named after her in recognition of her achievements.
