Toba Ajiboye’s funeral took place following his death from gunshot wounds inflicted by unidentified assailants who attacked his vehicle in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening. Mourners were visibly emotional, as footage shared on social media depicted the significant turnout for the ceremony.

The Lagos State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for the gunmen involved in the attack, with its Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirming that investigations are ongoing. The police report indicated that the incident occurred on Sunday evening, resulting in one fatality—Ajiboye himself—while other occupants of his vehicle were also injured. Sources reveal that Ajiboye had been visiting childhood friends prior to the attack, returning from a trip to Fadeyi when the shooting occurred. He was rushed to the hospital, where there were initial hopes for his recovery, but news later confirmed his death.

The attack also left three other passengers in his vehicle with serious injuries, and their conditions remain critical as they receive medical attention. Photographs circulating online later depicted Ajiboye’s vehicle riddled with bullet holes, underscoring the violence of the attack.

Mustapha Adekunle, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, described Ajiboye as a loyal ally and dedicated friend, expressing profound sadness over his unexpected passing. In his emotional tribute shared on Facebook, Adekunle hailed Ajiboye’s steadfast loyalty and commitment to the union, emphasizing the significant loss this represents for both the NURTW and the community.

Ajiboye’s death has elicited a range of reactions on social media; while many remembered him as a devoted union leader and community benefactor, others raised concerns regarding his legacy amid longstanding allegations of violence associated with transport union politics in Lagos. As investigations by the Lagos State Police Command continue, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
