Halima emphasized that philanthropy is a crucial aspect of her father’s legacy and has been integrated into their family’s long-term succession plans. Dangote has made a substantial contribution to his foundation, stating that he has allocated 33 percent of his estate according to the Sharia Code of Islam. This donation is part of their core belief that their business success is intertwined with giving back to the community.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation, established in 1994, is already a significant player in philanthropy, endowed with $1.25 billion and receiving an additional $700 million over the past decade. Approximately 70 percent of its expenditures are directed toward health, education, and humanitarian initiatives in Nigeria, with 20 percent across Africa and the remaining funds allocated to global projects. Among its notable partnerships is a collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has helped eradicate wild poliovirus in Africa.

Although Dangote’s decision to donate 33 percent is below the 50 percent benchmark of the Giving Pledge, it ranks as one of the largest philanthropic commitments by an African billionaire. TIME magazine recognized him as one of the most influential philanthropists in its TIME100 Philanthropy list earlier this year, lauding his foundation’s annual expenditure of over ₦50 billion on various programs across the continent.
