The incident was confirmed by the Police Commissioner, who also gave the Command’s Tactical Units the directive to work with other sister agencies to find the thugs who carried out the attack.

The incident happened on Monday along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway. The attackers attacked the agents who were conducting a regular patrol at Irete.

ASP Henry Okoye, the Command spokesperson, said in a news release that the four officers lost their lives in a gunfight between the attackers and the police.

“The injured victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently responding to treatment, and the lifeless bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at the mortuary for preservation,” the release partially said. “Upon receipt of the unfortunate incident, the Commissioner of Police immediately mobilized to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment of the ugly incident.”

In addition, the release stated that the Police Commissioner conveyed his regret for the regrettable event and swore that the Command would stop at nothing to ensure that the attackers were apprehended and prosecuted, emphasizing that the attackers had killed peace.

“The tragic incident serves as a painful reminder of the risks and sacrifices that law enforcement officers face on a daily basis as part of their unwavering commitment to public safety,” the CP said.

In addition to expressing sympathy to the victims’ families, Danjuma prayed for their spirits to rest in peace.
