Adedeji characterized this subsidy as detrimental, stating its removal is a pivotal reform contributing to positive economic developments under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He emphasized the necessity of this decision, especially in light of pressures from the global energy market and the ongoing Iran crisis, arguing that retaining the subsidy would impose a heavier financial burden on the country.
Adedeji defended the administration’s exchange-rate reforms, calling for a rational assessment of these economic policies free from emotional biases. He countered critics of Tinubu’s economic strategies, particularly those positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, and urged them to present viable alternatives to the current economic agenda. Since the subsidy removal, which was publicly announced by Tinubu on May 29, 2023, petrol prices have risen sharply, affecting transportation and living costs, while simultaneously increasing government revenues and allocations through the Federation Account. Adedeji maintains that the removal of the subsidy is the right course of action and essential for Nigeria’s economic recovery.
