Speaking at the launch of the 774 Explode Project in Akure, Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, termed women as essential for progress in various sectors, including governance and economics. He urged stakeholders to foster intentional inclusion of women, condemning cultural stereotypes and other barriers that restrict their potential and advocating for structured, action-oriented support for gender equity.

The Governor praised the National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Mary Idele, for initiating the 774 Explode Project, which aims to empower women politically. He argued that leadership qualities transcend gender, urging a collective commitment to dismantling systemic obstacles that hinder women’s advancement in leadership roles.

Dr. Idele reinforced this message, pointing out that young women possess necessary skills and potential for political leadership. She called for the establishment of opportunities for women to assume roles of influence in governance and urged traditional and community leaders to support women’s aspirations. Despite decades of advocacy for gender equality, women remain underrepresented in Nigeria’s political landscape, comprising nearly half the population yet facing substantial barriers to political representation.

The proposed Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill and advocacy for affirmative action are part of ongoing efforts by civil society and women’s groups to promote equal opportunities in governance, although tangible progress remains elusive. The governor’s remarks at the event highlighted a shared commitment to addressing these disparities through projects like the 774 Explode Initiative, signaling hope for greater gender inclusivity in Nigeria’s political future.
