Before a significant enforcement operation, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued an order to demolish all shanties and unlawful buildings along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway median, giving residents 72 hours to leave the region.
After spearheading the state’s monthly environmental cleansing program in Surulere Local Government Area with his wife, Ibijoke, Mr. Sanwo-Olu made the announcement on Saturday.
After the drill, Sanwo-Olu told reporters that enforcement teams will start clearing the route next week, focusing on the area between Orile-Iganmu and Okokomaiko.
“This is the last warning to anyone using the Lagos-Badagry Expressway median. We plan to clear the entire median starting next week. There will be nothing left. “Every unlawful building will be demolished,” he declared.
The governor emphasized that the state will not permit encroachment on public infrastructure and said that the highway median was never meant for commercial operations or informal settlements.
“It’s not supposed to be a market. It is not intended to be a location for building. Given the significant public investment in that area, we must protect it as a highway median,” he continued.
Sanwo-Olu pointed out that the 10-lane road, which was constructed with government money, is a significant entry point into Lagos and needs to be shielded from unauthorized use.
