Nigeria is set to repatriate over 1,000 of its nationals from South Africa amidst rising anti-immigrant tensions. This initiative follows Ghana’s recent repatriation of its citizens in response to xenophobic protests affecting foreigners. The voluntary repatriation scheme, confirmed by foreign ministry spokesman Kimiebi Ebienfa, began with screenings to assess those eligible for return, with waivers negotiated for individuals facing immigration-related offenses by Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria.

South Africa, as the continent’s most industrialized nation, has long been a destination for documented and undocumented African workers. However, with an unemployment rate exceeding 30%, it has experienced intense xenophobic violence recently, raising alarm about migrants’ safety. Citizen-led groups have issued ultimatums for illegal immigrants, exacerbating fears of violence and reminding the public of past incidents that have resulted in loss of life.

The South African government has stated it is increasing enforcement against undocumented immigrants but is cautioning citizens against taking violent action. There are over three million foreigners residing in South Africa, or 5.1% of the total population, with more than 63% originating from countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The current situation has sparked renewed dialogue across Africa about xenophobia, migration, and the stark contrast between pan-African ideals and the actual experiences of migrants on the continent.
