In a decisive move to ensure fair play in next year’s elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions by March 31, 2026. The order covers ministers, ministers of state, presidential advisers, senior and special assistants, personal aides, directors-general, and heads of federal agencies and government-owned companies.

The directive, issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by Senator George Akume, references Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and is in line with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable for party primaries. Those planning to seek party nominations or elective positions must submit their resignation letters through the Secretary’s office by the deadline.

“President Tinubu emphasised that this measure is necessary to ensure full compliance with electoral laws, maintain transparency, and create a level playing field for all aspirants,” the circular stated.

Political analysts say the move is a key step in separating government duties from political campaigns, a challenge that has previously fueled controversies in Nigeria’s election cycles. With INEC releasing its schedule for primaries and election activities, the directive marks a critical juncture for the nation’s political landscape as preparations for 2027 intensify.
