Iortyom, who has served two terms as the State Publicity Secretary for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has urged party stakeholders to back him in his newly appointed role as Consultant for Media and Public Communications. He emphasized that this position is critical for the PDP’s strategy to reclaim governance from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. Iortyom expressed deep concern regarding the current leadership, describing the governor’s capabilities as dangerously inadequate, akin to someone steering without proper qualifications.

In a shocking incident, Iortyom was attacked by unknown assailants while he was pulling over to make a phone call along George Akume Way in Makurdi. The assault occurred around 8 pm when five attackers arrived on two motorcycles, blocked his path, and assaulted him with axes. Iortyom recounted how he narrowly escaped by quickly exiting his vehicle before the attackers set his Peugeot 406 on fire. His attempts to seek help went unheeded, as onlookers merely urged him to flee.

Following the attack, Iortyom reported the incident to the E Division of the State Police Command, underlining it as indicative of the escalating political tension within the state. He urged security agencies, emphasizing their constitutional obligations over individual or group interests, to intensify efforts to ensure public safety. Iortyom’s statement reflects a growing concern for the wellbeing of citizens amid rising political violence, calling for proactive measures to prevent a descent into lawlessness.
