Our Motivation Is Shaped by Our Habits, Not the Other Way Around

Motivation is an excellent starter, but it does not always last. Life can stifle motivation, and we blame ourselves for a lack of willpower. As motivation fades and life gets in the way, better habit-based methods are required.

You wake up at six in the morning one day, go to the gym, study a chapter, and eat healthily. The following one? You’re wondering where all that energy went when you’re browsing endlessly and dozing off. Everybody has been there.

The good news is that motivation doesn’t have to bear the entire burden of your objectives. Habits have a part in that.

A HABIT is something you do almost subconsciously, such as cleaning your teeth, checking your phone when bored, or fastening your shoes. It operates on autopilot.

Habits form via a simple loop:

Cue: Something causes the behavior.

Routine: You engage in the behavior.

Reward: You gain anything from it (joy, relief, sense of accomplishment).

IT BECOMES A HABIT, when you do it frequently enough, and your brain begins to think, “Cool, I’ll just do this without bothering you for approval next time.”

**   How Positive Habits Help Motivation

Habits Make Life Easier
It doesn’t take much thought to develop a habit. You don’t have to psych yourself up; simply do it. The same is true while journaling, walking, or working on a side hustle.

NOTE: Less thinking = less resistance, which is = more consistent action.

They Create Momentum.
When you stick to a habit, even a modest one, you will begin to experience growth. Progress makes you happy. And how about that feeling? It raises your motivation to continue.

They reinforce your identity.
When you do anything for a long time, you begin to believe it is part of your identity.

Run every day? You’re “a runner.” Write every morning? You are “a writer.” When your behaviors match the person you want to be, motivation comes effortlessly since you’re no longer simply trying, but living it.

 **  How About Negative Habits?
On the other hand, negative habits develop in the same manner and undermine motivation.

It doesn’t feel like much to skip one workout, binge-watch one show, or browse past bedtime. However, if you do it frequently enough, it will become your new normal.

The secret? Replace negative habits instead than merely trying to break them. Take a walk instead of scrolling. Choose snacks that you genuinely appreciate in favor of junk food. Make the easier but better decision.
