Lagos State Governor Bars Local Govt Chairpersons From Appointing Advisers, Other Political Appointees

The Lagos State Government has directed all recently sworn-in chairmen of the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 20 Local Governments to halt the recruitment of political office holders, such as Senior Special Assistants, Supervisors, and Special Advisers.

In accordance with the governor’s directives during the recent swearing-in ceremony, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, issued an official circular on July 31, 2025, with reference number MLG/LGA/C.27/S./VOL.XIV/496.
The circular states that at this moment, only the appointment of the Chief of Staff is allowed.
Chairmen are urged to promptly revoke any political appointments they may have made outside of the Chief of Staff.

“I am to reiterate that the appointment of the Chief of Staff is the only appointment approved/permissible as you assume office, while other appointments should be stepped down until further directive,” the statement said, referring to the directive of Mr. Governor at the swearing-in ceremony regarding the appointment of Political Office Holders in the Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas, specifically the Supervisors, Special Advisers, and Senior Special Assistants.
“With the exception of the Chief of Staff, you are required to take note of the aforementioned and reverse any appointments that have been made,” Bolarinwa continued.

In a similar vein, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu prohibited the 57 just sworn-in chairman of local governments and Local Council Development Areas from designating supervisory council members and secretaries to local governments last weekend.
