Along with them was Ganiyu Ayomide, 22, a nephew of Olunlade. The NSCDC Commandant, Toma Enya, shared that the suspects removed the cables during road construction efforts initiated by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, which had kept the cables secure while awaiting reinstallation. However, the cables began to disappear over months.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the suspects had stolen the cables piece by piece and sold them to a metal scrap dealer known as Aminu or “Bollar,” who remains at large. They reportedly sold the cables for a total of ₦150,000. Enya emphasized ongoing efforts to apprehend Aminu and stated that the suspects would face legal charges once the investigation concludes.

In his statement, Olunlade admitted to the crime, explaining that he proposed the theft to his son and Ayomide, and that they had stolen cables three times, sharing the proceeds equally each time. He pleaded for leniency, promising not to engage in such acts again.

Furthermore, the Osun State Police Command announced the arrest of six suspects related to the vandalization and theft of a high-tension powerline pole in Ikirun, following credible intelligence that led to their apprehension at the crime scene. The events underscore the increasing focus on protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, as highlighted by the NSCDC Commandant.
