Central to this operation was the arrest of Afolabi Kazeem Michael, an alleged key figure in the syndicate known as “KC Luxury,” who attempted to flee Nigeria while posing as a luxury goods dealer and social media influencer.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (retd.) emphasized that this significant operation resulted in the seizure of 184.50 kg of cocaine, marking it as the largest cocaine capture via a courier service in Nigeria’s history. The operation initiated with the interception of a cocaine-laden consignment concealed for export through a courier channel in Lagos. Following this seizure, Marwa directed the establishment of a Special Investigation Team to trace the syndicate’s entire network, which included couriers and masterminds.
The cartel had intentions to generate approximately N39 billion from the cocaine shipment. Through collaboration with the courier company involved, the NDLEA unearthed a network of intermediaries that led to several arrests, notably that of Lawal Mujab Kehinde, who played a pivotal role in processing consignments for the cartel.
Marwa described Afolabi Michael as the principal Nigerian coordinator for the cartel. He was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on August 13, 2026, while attempting to board a flight to Paris, carrying significant amounts of cash and luxury items. Further investigations revealed various high-value assets at his residence, highlighting the contrast between his public persona and criminal activities.
The NDLEA also noted the cartel’s utilization of falsified identities and financial facilitators to disguise the true consignors of its shipments, along with maintaining ties to criminal networks in the UK, some of which had already been arrested in relation to the cartel’s operations. The dismantling of this network is linked to prior successes against other drug trafficking organizations, including the takedown of a Swiss-based cartel and two Mexican-Nigerian methamphetamine syndicates.
Marwa asserted that this operation sends a message that drug traffickers cannot elude detection through luxury lifestyles or hidden channels. He recognized the international cooperation that aided in this operation, mentioning concurrent arrests made in both Nigeria and the UK. Marwa concluded with a warning to those attempting to mask drug trafficking activities behind glamorous lifestyles and social media facades that the NDLEA will relentlessly pursue them.
