The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has initiated a directive for the demolition of houses constructed on designated water channels in Abuja, stemming from a recent inspection that highlighted the adverse effects of flooding in the area. During a press briefing, Wike expressed concerns regarding property owners who have obstructed waterways, which are part of the Abuja Master Plan intended for proper water flow. He reiterated that the heavy flooding experienced over the weekend has underscored the dangers of such obstructions, noting, “nothing happened yesterday does not mean that something will not happen today.”

Wike emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the affected structures would be demolished, irrespective of the status of their owners, including prominent politicians. He has mandated the FCT Development Control Department to take action against these illegal structures by Saturday, warning that excuses for inaction would not be accepted. “Any house that falls on the water channel will go down,” he affirmed. He acknowledged the inevitable public backlash that might arise as the demolition potentially coincides with election campaigns, yet his stance remains firm: the appropriateness of actions cannot be compromised for political reasons. Wike’s decisive measures reflect a commitment to adhere to the standards of the Abuja Master Plan, ensuring the integrity of the city’s waterways and the safety of its inhabitants.
