The controversy arose when he replied to a social media query about his children’s fluency in French and their ability to speak Igbo, leading him to ask, “Who Naija language help?”. This statement drew significant criticism and accusations of cultural insensitivity.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Mr P clarified that his intent was never to disrespect Nigerian languages or culture. He acknowledged that his response upset people and took full responsibility for how it was perceived. He clarified that the remarks about “Naija language” were meant to refer to the variety of indigenous languages in Nigeria rather than singling out the Igbo language, which he claimed was a misunderstanding fueled by others.

The former P-Square member also accused his twin brother, Paul Okoye (Rudeboy), of exploiting the controversy to damage his reputation. He alleged that Rudeboy had repeatedly twisted his words and publicly criticized him, particularly for allegedly mocking his dancing. Mr P stated, “Just like I wrote in my open letter two years ago, doing everything possible to make people hate me will never work,” emphasizing that he no longer intends to remain silent in the face of personal attacks.

He concluded by indicating a shift in his approach, stating, “It’s aura for aura, Egusi for Egusi, Oha for Oha,” suggesting he would respond to negativity in kind. The situation highlights the sensitivity surrounding discussions of language and culture in Nigeria, particularly concerning the evolving identities within its diverse linguistic landscape.
