Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a previous senator for Ogun Central, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to ongoing disrespect and unfair treatment from the party’s leadership in Ogun State. In a resignation letter dated May 31, addressed to state APC Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, she expressed dissatisfaction with the consensus process that led to Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) being selected as the party’s governorship candidate. Obasanjo criticized the process as not aligning with APC guidelines and highlighted her exclusion, stating that she was neither consulted nor involved prior to Adeola’s announcement.

Obasanjo reported that some supporters were barred from attending the unveiling of Adeola as the consensus candidate and faced intimidation, yet she publicly congratulated him to promote party unity. Following Adeola’s emergence, he requested a meeting with her supporters, during which three requests were made to him, with a promised response within a week that has since gone unanswered for over two months.

She articulated a broader sense of disregard for her contributions within the party, stating, “When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table.” Despite her grievances, she thanked President Bola Tinubu, Chief Sanusi, and other leaders for their support during her time in the APC.

Prof. Obasanjo returned to politics earlier this year after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, following a long hiatus from active politics since losing her re-election bid in 2011. Her political comeback, notable for a campaign presence ahead of the 2027 elections, culminated in her decision to run for the Ogun governorship under the APC before choosing to resign from the party.
