The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has initiated a major enforcement exercise against vehicles operating with tinted glasses, obscured number plates, and improper registration across Abuja. The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, announced this crackdown as part of efforts to curb the use of such vehicles by criminals involved in serious offenses, including robberies and kidnappings. He emphasized that intelligence reports indicate that criminal elements utilize tinted vehicles to conceal their identities and evade law enforcement, posing significant threats to public safety.

Sanusi stated that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, authorized the command to enforce the ban, reflecting a commitment to uphold the FCT Road Transport Regulations Act. More than 30 vehicles have already been seized as part of the operation, and their owners will face prosecution in accordance with existing laws. The exercise is described as essential for protecting law-abiding citizens and enhancing security in the region.

The commissioner urged residents to support the police’s enforcement efforts, promoting vigilance in reporting suspicious activities. He reassured the public that the initiative aims to restrict criminals’ chances of operating undetected rather than inconveniencing ordinary citizens. This enforcement comes at a time of uncertainty regarding the status of the Nigeria Police Force’s tinted glass permit policy, which had been suspended following a court order. The police had previously indicated plans to resume enforcement, but questions remain about the current legality of tinted vehicle regulations.
