In advance of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has sent explosive ordnance disposal teams to places of worship, leisure centers, and other public locations.
The deployment is a component of the enhanced security measures that the Command implemented to guarantee a hassle-free and peaceful celebration throughout the Federal Capital Territory.
The Command has stepped up security operations in the region, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi and Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh.
She said that the Command had initiated a joint security arrangement known as “Operation Sweep FCT” in cooperation with other security agencies, such as the military, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigerian Immigration Service.
She claims that the operation has been split up into important areas around the region, with security guards conducting coordinated operations and ongoing patrols to stop and deal with illegal activity.
According to the statement, “Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams have also been directed to conduct proactive sweeps of designated worship centers, recreational facilities, and other venues expected to host large gatherings as part of the Command’s preventive security strategy.”
The Command further stated that police are instructed to carry out all operations in a professional and law-abiding manner, adding that intelligence-led operations and raids on known flashpoints and places connected to illicit drug activity have also been ordered.
Additionally, the police commissioner convened a strategic Zoom conference with Divisional Police Officers and Divisional Crime Officers around the Command, directing them to maintain professionalism and vigilance prior to, during, and following the festivities.
While cautioning that unprofessional behavior by officers would not be accepted, he emphasized the need for greater community involvement, quick response to distress calls, and improved visibility policing.
