Just two weeks have passed after a three-story building collapsed at No. 325 Bornu Street in the state’s Ebute Meta neighborhood, killing four people.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso confirmed the development in a message posted on his Instagram account on Wednesday. He stated that first responders, including members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, quickly arrived at the scene.

“A two-story building at 4, Modupeola Street, Mangoro bus stop, Alimosho, Lagos State, has collapsed,” Omotoso tweeted.

The incident happened at approximately 6 p.m., and its cause was not immediately known. An investigation into the incident has been started by government officials.

He said, “A trapped victim and five others were rescued from the rubble by the LASEMA and other first responders who arrived at the scene in good time.”

He said that while the trapped sufferer was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Surgical Emergency by the Lagos State Ambulance Service after suffering a fracture and bruising, the other five rescued victims were taken to a nearby private hospital.
“The trapped person was admitted right away for additional treatment after arriving at the hospital in a stable condition. According to Omotoso, the 44-year-old patient resides at 10 Olabode Street in Alimosho.

Additionally, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said on Wednesday that the building, which was initially a bungalow, had been being converted into a two-story structure while the ground floor was still occupied.

In a statement, the agency’s Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, verified this and added that the building’s back portion was impacted by the fall.

Right now, things are under control. The Agege Fire Station and the Ikeja Fire Station were among the responding units. After being rescued, five adult male construction workers had various injuries and were sent right away to the hospital for treatment.

No fatalities were reported in the incident, Adeseye continued.

Our correspondent visited the site on Thursday and observed that the Lagos State Building Control Agency had shut the building.

However, a resident who spoke to our correspondent only as Moses claimed that the victims were at work when the tragedy occurred.

“We know it has been operating for weeks, but we really can’t tell when they started building the storey building because of the tree that covers the house. When the partial collapse happened, building was still in progress.

Another resident, who requested that his name not be published for privacy reasons, claimed that because of the rain, other people were not aware of the occurrence at the time it occurred.

People in the vicinity were unaware of what had transpired because it was raining at the time. You hardly ever see people on the street in this estate, as you can see. The alarm was set off to alert other occupants by someone who was on the property.

According to information obtained by our correspondent, the locals started rescue efforts prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.

Around 6:30 p.m., the firefighters arrived and took over from the residents. Before being treated and taken to the hospital, one of them appeared to be nearly paralyzed due to severe injuries, according to another resident who also yearned for anonymity.

Lagos is still dealing with a high number of building collapses, and the most recent occurrence coincides with requests for more enforcement of building laws.
