In addition to providing an update, Abdullahi Baba-Arab, the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, also verified that the 48 individuals were so badly burned that a mass burial in the local government was required.
He claims that 18 additional bodies were found from the 30 bodies that had previously been reported after additional search and rescue efforts
“My agency found 18 more bodies that were also burned to death after additional search and rescue operations, and all the deceased have been given a mass burial,” he said.
This was revealed by Baba-Arab in a statement, in which he said that the incident occurred 2 km from the Dendo community in Agaie LGA, along Lapai-Agaie, at approximately 12.30 am.
He added that a pickup van and a crane truck were engulfed in flames, and that more than fifty livestock had been burned.
“NSEMA has received a report of a deadly tanker explosion that occurred along Lapai-Agaie on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at about 12.30 am, 2 km from Dendo Community in Agaie LGA,” the notification stated.
“The tragedy happened when a truck carrying tourists and cattle from Wudil in Kano State headed to Lagos collided with a gasoline tanker laden with PMS. Two additional vehicles, a crane truck and a pickup van, were also involved in the collision.
“More than 50 cattle have been burned, and over 30 people are officially dead.” More dead are still inside the vehicles; thus, the NSEMA Rapid Response Team and the LGEMCs are currently on the scene of the event performing a search and rescue operation.
