Recent developments revealed that City was found guilty of all but one of 115 charges concerning financial regulations, raising concerns about unprecedented sanctions against the club. In an open letter, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed confidence in the club’s innocence, while Soriano addressed the issue during a European Football Clubs board meeting in Copenhagen. He noted that the lengthy investigation, initiated in 2018, has taken eight years to reach this point, implying that the resolution will take additional time.

Attendees at the meeting included prominent figures such as Manchester United’s Jean-Claude Blanc and Everton’s Dan Friedkin. The charges against City encompass several allegations, including failing to disclose complete salary details for former manager Roberto Mancini from 2009 to 2013. Mancini, now re-managing Italy, dismissed these allegations, suggesting they are unrelated to his current role.

The Premier League has not commented on the verdict, and a City spokesperson reiterated that their legal proceedings remain ongoing and confidential. The allegations also extend to inaccuracies in financial reporting from 2009 onwards, involving player remuneration inaccuracies and a lack of cooperation during the investigation phase from 2018 to 2023. The situation has prompted discussions about the potential impact on Manchester City’s legacy and achievements, with some voices, such as former footballer Graeme Souness, arguing that any significant penalties could tarnish the club’s reputation permanently. He stated that if the outcome is unfavorable for City, it could raise questions about the legitimacy of their achievements during the contested period, with calls even for the awarding of titles to rival clubs, including Liverpool. The incident highlights the potential repercussions that extend beyond the football pitch, igniting debates on regulatory integrity within the sport.
