The incident occurred amidst family tensions, as Ummul Khair, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, resisted her father’s attempts to marry her off to a suitor of his choice.

Witnesses reported that the assault began on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, when Sani allegedly started beating his daughter. Neighbors, disturbed by her cries, attempted to intervene but were denied entry to the home. The physical abuse continued until Thursday morning, when Ummul Khair lost consciousness.

The situation came to light when her friends visited on Thursday morning to escort her to school and found her lifeless body while her father was reportedly preparing her for burial. Neighbors were alerted and contacted the police, who confirmed that Sani was arrested shortly after the discovery.

Community members expressed their shock and devastation over the incident, noting that Ummul Khair had been determined to choose her own future against her father’s pressures. Following Islamic rites, she was buried on Thursday morning at the Abbatoir Cemetery.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, with DSP Sadik Aliyu from the Katsina State Police Command acknowledging the incident while promising further information post-investigation.
