The global football body revealed on Friday that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and inclusion for fans living with disabilities around the world.
According to FIFA, the project is aimed at ensuring supporters can fully enjoy the World Cup experience both inside stadiums and while watching remotely.
“FIFA remains committed to giving every fan, including persons with disabilities, as well as their families and friends, the best possible experience during the FIFA World Cup,” the organisation stated.
The new accessibility measures build on services already introduced during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which included audio-descriptive commentary and sensory support kits.
For the 2026 tournament, FIFA plans to introduce additional accessibility features such as tactile boards and upgraded sensory assistance services.
One of the major highlights is the introduction of live sign language commentary for all matches throughout the competition.
FIFA explained that the broadcasts will offer more than simple interpretation by helping Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing fans fully connect with the atmosphere and emotions of the game.
“Sign language commentary goes beyond ordinary translation. It delivers an immersive football experience by communicating the excitement, emotions and intensity of the match,” the statement added.
Interpreters will reportedly communicate not only match action but also important environmental and emotional cues, including crowd reactions, referee whistles and changes in stadium atmosphere.
FIFA also disclosed that matches hosted in the United States and Canada will feature American Sign Language interpretation, while games played in Mexico will use Mexican Sign Language.
During the knockout rounds, most matches will continue with American Sign Language coverage, while selected fixtures involving Spanish-speaking nations will also feature Mexican Sign Language support.
Fans will be able to access the sign language broadcasts through the official FIFA World Cup app by selecting the stadium, opening the accessibility section and activating the sign language feature.
FIFA noted that the move reflects its long-term vision of making football more inclusive and accessible to supporters across the globe.
