A mother and her daughter were murdered by suspected gunmen at a chicken farm in the Igushi settlement, close to Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
Three other employees were kidnapped by the attackers during the Thursday incident.
According to local sources, the gunmen scaled the fence to enter the farm and tried to abduct workers before shooting the two dead.
Three people were later taken from the farm by the attackers, according to a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“The gunmen came through the fence,” he stated. They took three people away when they were around five. The poultry owner and her daughter were later discovered dead.
“We promptly summoned the Amotekun and the police, who sent their officers to the scene. The victims were later saved by them.
In a statement, Abayomi Jimoh, the state police public relations officer, acknowledged the event and said that attempts were on to capture the offenders.
“The Ondo State Police Command strongly condemns the heinous, violent incident at Igushin via Ala, Akure, which led to the tragic loss of two innocent lives,” the PPRO stated. The Command is deeply saddened by the documented deaths, even though two victims were successfully rescued through a quick and well-coordinated operation.
While efforts are underway to capture the offenders, the Command guarantees the public that sufficient security measures have been implemented to protect lives and property and that those responsible will be held accountable.
“Residents are asked to cooperate with security agencies by giving timely and helpful information and to remain vigilant.”
Particularly in the vicinity of Akure and the communities that surround it, recent attacks and kidnappings have sparked security worries in some parts of Ondo State, and locals have frequently demanded more security in rural regions.
