During a courtesy visit to INEC’s offices in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, OYSIEC Chairman Dr. Afees Adeniyi made this statement on Thursday.
According to Adeniyi, the visit was required in order for OYSIEC to formally inform INEC leadership of the changed poll date and request assistance for the efficient administration of local government elections.
In order to attain the intended results in the upcoming local government elections, he pointed out that the law explicitly states INEC’s supportive role to state electoral commissions, emphasizing the necessity of ongoing cooperation.
“As a sister electoral body, we are here today to interact with your office, formally inform you that our election is set for December 29, 2026, and to make our requests.”
“We are still appreciative of your office’s outstanding assistance in 2023. As we get ready for the upcoming election, we anticipate further direction and counsel from the commission.
He stated, “As part of our preparations, we intend to request certain electoral materials, including an updated voter register, and seek your advice on how to tackle political apathy and other pertinent matters.”
Prof. Adeniran Tella, the Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, responded by promising to work with OYSIEC to guarantee a free, fair, and reliable local government poll.
He affirmed that the success of OYSIEC would significantly contribute to the state’s advancement and foster good governance, pointing out that the state Independent Electoral Commissions’ function remained crucial in bolstering democracy at the local level.
“I urge you to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality, and respect for the rule of law as you take office.
It is important to remember that candidates from the state’s ruling party typically win local government elections.It’s time for state Independent democratic Commissions to take the initiative by holding fair elections and exhibiting the bravery required to preserve the legitimacy and integrity of the democratic process.
Tella stated, “We hope that this engagement will further strengthen the cordial relationship between the two institutions.”
