Residents of Plateau State, especially in Jos North and other Muslim-majority neighborhoods, are on edge after a social media post warned of possible violence once Ramadan ends.
The post, shared by Sharfadeen Bature on Facebook, referenced recent attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas, where both Christians and Muslims were reportedly killed. Bature suggested Muslims might seek revenge for the killing of four Muslim traders in Dorowa-Babuje, Barkin Ladi.
In Hausa, he wrote: “Bayan azumi, zamu shirya cin kutumar ubansu, koma ya koma yankinsa,” meaning, “After fasting, we will deal with them. Everyone should return to their region.”
The post has caused alarm, with residents calling on security agencies to act. Edward Nanle commented, “These are the type of people who ignite crises in this state and cause religious conflict. But the funny thing is that he will not be arrested and prosecuted.” Funom Peter added, “Authorities should pick him up and get to the root of this; he may not be alone.” Istifanus Bitrus urged immediate action: “This is a very serious threat, and this man should be arrested.”
Frustration is mounting as many wonder why no arrests have been made, suggesting a double standard if the threat came from a Christian.
With tensions high and recent attacks still fresh, communities are calling for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent any outbreak of violence as Ramadan draws to a close.
