The documentary Melania, which chronicles First Lady Melania Trump’s preparations for President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, has posted a stronger-than-expected box office debut, earning an estimated $7 million in U.S. theaters over its opening weekend.

Early industry projections had placed the film’s opening between $2 million and $5 million, making the final tally a notable surprise for a documentary release.

Analysts say the performance represents the largest theatrical opening for a documentary in the past decade, surpassing the $5 million debut of After Death in 2023.

While the film has struggled with critics, holding an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Sunday, audience response appears far more positive. Moviegoers surveyed after screenings gave the film an “A” CinemaScore, suggesting strong word-of-mouth among viewers.

The film’s release comes amid heightened political attention as President Trump prepares to return to office, a backdrop analysts say likely helped drive audience interest.

Despite the strong start, the documentary faces challenges in turning a profit. Amazon, through its MGM studio, is reported to have spent around $40 million to acquire the film, along with an estimated $35 million on marketing and promotion.

Amazon MGM has not publicly confirmed the film’s production or marketing costs.

Box office figures remain preliminary and may be revised as additional data becomes available.
