The African star apple, a popular seasonal fruit across West and Central Africa, is attracting growing attention for its nutrient content and potential health benefits.

Known in Nigeria as agbalumo or udara, the fruit (Chrysophyllum albidum) is in season between December and March and is commonly eaten fresh or used in juices, jams, and other local products.

Nutrition data shows that 100 grams of the fruit’s pulp contains notable amounts of vitamin C, potassium, calcium, dietary fiber, and beta-carotene, along with smaller levels of iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Experts say this mix of nutrients may support heart health, digestion, and immune function.

Studies conducted in laboratories and on animals suggest the fruit contains compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Researchers have also explored its possible role in helping regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels, though they caution that most of the evidence remains early-stage.

Animal research has linked extracts of the African star apple to improved memory and cognitive function, but scientists stress that human studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Nutritionists say the fruit can be a healthy addition to a balanced diet, but warn it should not be viewed as a substitute for medical treatment.
