In a special homage on Thursday to honor Akande’s life of service and dedication to democracy, Tinubu made this statement. He characterized Akande as a towering personality who made a substantial contribution to the institutionalization of democracy and political growth in Nigeria.
The President claimed that Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive philosophy and dedication to public service influenced Akande’s political path.

Before leaving the private sector to work for the government, Akande started out as an accountant for British Petroleum.
In 1979, he held the position of Secretary to the State Government in the former Oyo State. Later, under the Second Republic, he was appointed Deputy Governor. Tinubu pointed out that Akande went on to serve as Osun’s governor from 1999 to 2003, when he made much more of an impact.

According to Tinubu, Akande lay the groundwork for the APC’s historic win in 2015 while serving as its acting chairman.  Akande’s leadership, honesty, hard work, and sacrifices for the party and the country were all commended by the president.

He referred to Akande as a mentor whose counsel, support, and direction influenced his political path.
Tinubu stated that Akande’s ongoing backing of his government and the Renewed Hope Agenda is still crucial.

He pointed out that Akande was still a strong supporter of democracy, social fairness, and good governance at the age of 87.   As he celebrated Akande’s milestone birthday, the President prayed for his health and rejuvenated strength. (NAN)
