The Lagos State Government clarified that the demolition of buildings in FESTAC Town was not sanctioned by the state and denied any role in the recent event.
Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday headed “Lagos Government Denies Involvement in FESTAC Demolition.” On Tuesday, Oluyinka Olumide, the commissioner for physical planning and urban development, provided clarification on the continuing destruction. “Contrary to rumours, the State Government had no role in the demolitions carried out in the area,” he clarified.

Olumide reaffirmed that all demolition operations in Lagos are conducted in accordance with an open and controlled process. He emphasised that any destruction done without official approval does not represent the stance or practice of the current government and clarified that such actions must include the publication of statutory notices and interaction with affected stakeholders.

We wish to reassure citizens that the Lagos State Government is still dedicated to upholding due process, equity, and property rights. Any demolitions done without the required authorisation are not consistent with this administration’s stance or policies, Olumide stated. Additionally, before beginning any demolition work, he encouraged all agencies—including federal entities that operate in Lagos—to confer with and secure approval from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. Following a string of demolitions in FESTAC this October, the clarification was made. Over 15 buildings were demolished along 6th Avenue over the weekend, leaving store owners and dealers stunned as bulldozers swept from building to building.
