More than 20 years after being put in a coma following a catastrophic car accident in London, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud, also referred to as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” passed away at the age of 36.

The prince experienced intestinal bleeding and a brain hemorrhage in 2005, when he was only 15 years old.

“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today,” he said, quoting a phrase from the Quran at the time.

Prince Al-Waleed had been attending a military college in London before the disaster.

He was taken to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh after the crash, where he was kept in a coma and received round-the-clock medical attention.

Prince Khaled opposed repeated requests to remove his son from life support and never gave up on a recovery despite his long-term condition.

Prince Al-Waleed was frequently surrounded by family members who continued to care for him in photos that were made public throughout the years. In the Arab world, his situation garnered a lot of attention, and he came to represent faith and hope.

The hashtag #SleepingPrince is trending on social media as a result of the public outpouring of sadness following the news of his passing.
