On Thursday, August 8, 2024, at around noon, a canoe carrying twenty people overturned while it was crossing the Gamoda River close to Nahuce village.
Following receipt of the distress call, a group of police officers, neighborhood divers, and Good Samaritans hurried to the area in an attempt to save lives, according to Lawan Shiisu Adam, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, who verified the occurrence in a statement.
The PPRO stated, “Unfortunately, five of the passengers were found dead.”
The fatalities are identified as Ado Nafance, 75, Shafiu Mohd, 25, Abdurra’uf Mohd, 15; Suleman Ali, 20; Alasan Mohd, 16; and all residents of Taura LGA.
The remaining people are still being rescued.
Amad Abdullahi, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, has since sent his sincere condolences to the victims’ families.
“We pray for the departed souls to find eternal peace and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the deceased’s immediate family,” he said.
