The union urged the governors to stop the maltreatment and follow the path of honor by restoring sanity in the affected institutions, including recalling ASUU members who were unjustly sacked.
The ASUU chairman said, “The National Executive Council (NEC) of our union, at its meeting that took place at the University of Ibadan on the 17th and 18th of August 2024, resolved, among other things, to mark the 10th of September 2024 as a national day of solidarity with our members who are being victimized in some universities.
Lagos State University (LASU), Ojoo; Kogi State University (KSU), Anyingba; Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki; Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma; Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO); and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam are among these universities, though they are not the only ones.
“Our members have endured and continue to endure immense hardship in each of the aforementioned universities. This can’t happen.
We are concerned about the apparent cooperation with the courts in several of these universities to make our members’ suffering worse. With this appeal, we want the courts to move quickly so that our members can receive justice. Is justice denied, or is it just delayed? Who will present their case now that a few of our harmed members have passed away while battling the injustice done to them?
In view of the aforementioned, the University of Jos chapter of ASUU is speaking to you today in order to alert all relevant parties to the preventable, unjustifiable, and unbearable suffering that is being inflicted upon our colleagues.
“Our union expresses concern that the administrators and visitors to these universities have persisted in abusing our members through unlawful means such as termination of employment, suspension, withholding of salaries, denial and postponement of promotions, failure to pay union dues, and other deductions from third parties,” among other things.
The ASUU chairman stated that there had been an ongoing conflict at Lagos State University, Ojo, between the union and the university, which had resulted in the victimization of certain union leaders.
He bemoaned the fact that the Lagos State Government has not released and implemented the white paper, even after turning in the visitation panel report more than two years ago.
We thus demand that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu promptly call back our colleagues who were wrongfully fired. Failure to do so will result in the NEC of our union continuing to impose the censure on LASU.
Anyingba, the union head, stated that ASUU has a long history of fights at Kogi State University, with the main goals being the welfare of their members as well as the enhancement of the university’s physical infrastructure and academic standards.
Regretfully, Kogi State University Anyigba has fallen short of the aspirations of its founding fathers and is now a shell of its former self as a result of the unpatriotic actions of the state government and university administration. Let justice be served. Let KSU 120’s persecution come to an end. Permit the restoration to occur. Our members are receiving punishment despite there having been no accusations of any infractions made against them. We thus demand that the governor of Kogi State follow the high road and take the necessary action.
The ASUU has expressed concerns over the lack of infrastructure at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Federal University of Technology (FUTO), and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU). The union has demanded the immediate recall of the chairperson of their union and his predecessor. The university administration has been accused of a running battle, leading to the seizure of salaries, non-remittance of third-party deductions, and the use of a Special Intervention Team. The union has also demanded the reversal of the Vice Chancellor’s actions against its members.
