Terry G discusses his failure to receive clearance for his song “Mary Jane,” a collaboration with Wizkid, and why he has been requested to remove the song during an appearance on the Afrobeats Podcast.

According to the seminal Nigerian street music artist, during his days, collaborations were the consequence of love and respect among colleagues and there were no procedures and need for clearance before publishing the collaboration.
“When we did the song, it was all about love and there was nothing like clearance,” Terry G tells host Adesope in pidgin.

The hitmaker went on to say that getting the required clearances and acting professionally are now essential in the changing music industry.

Terry G said that Wizkid’s lawyers sent an email to his management requesting that he remove the song, and he has given his staff instructions to do it.

Fans were taken aback by Terry G’s choice to release his song “Mary Jane” in 2024, particularly considering how long ago the song was recorded. It also sparked rumors about whether Wizkid gave the song his blessing.

Terry G insists that he still has great memories of Wizkid, the Grammy winner whom he calls the Jay Z of his time, and that he still holds the musician in the highest regard despite the takedown notice.
