After just one season, veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos has informed hometown club Sevilla that his second spell with them is finished, the La Liga team said on Monday.
Over the course of a more than two-decade career, Ramos cemented his position in football history by winning four Champions League titles with Real Madrid, the 2010 World Cup, two European championships with Spain, and more. He then returned to help struggling Sevilla get through a challenging season.
Ramos, 38, made 37 games for Sevilla on their difficult journey to 14th place in La Liga, changing coaches along the way.
In 2005, Ramos left Sevilla at the age of 19 to spend 15 years with Real Madrid. He later played for Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons.
The record seven-time Europa League winners said Ramos would bid farewell to fans on Tuesday after informing them on Monday his dream return to the club who brought him on from youth level was over.
“Sergio Ramos has informed Sevilla FC that he will not stay next season,” the club said in a statement.
