Barcelona advanced to the Women’s Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday by smashing Roma 5-1, while Arsenal overcame a deficit to defeat Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Emirates and advance to the semifinals 2-1 on aggregate.
Favorites of the competition, Barca, enjoyed a slim 1-0 lead from the first leg in the Italian city last week.
But in front of 55,000 spectators at the Camp Nou, the runners-up from the previous season quickly took a 3-0 lead before halftime.

In front of a record-breaking crowd of more than 20,000 spectators for a Women’s Champions League game in England, Arsenal overturned a 1-0 first leg loss to advance to the last four for the first time in ten years.

Even without injured star attackers Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead, the Arsenal dominated Bayern in the opening period.
On the 20th minute, Frida Maanum equalized the score with a powerful shot that smacked off the underside of the crossbar.
Stina Blackstenius had the easy chore of capping off an excellent team play with a header into an open goal from Katie McCabe’s cross moments later, giving Arsenal the lead.

The only reason there was a tense conclusion was because of some wasted finishing on Jonas Eidevall’s end.

Excellent opportunities to increase the lead were wasted by Leah Williamson and Caitlin Foord, while Lotte Wubben-Moy struck the crossbar.

Arsenal persevered, however, to prolong Bayern’s wait for the championship.

Chelsea, the defending English champions, retain the advantage going into Thursday’s thrilling quarterfinal matchup after defeating Lyon 1-0 in the first leg.

In the other quarterfinal, Wolfsburg leads Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 with the second leg to be played in Germany.
