The Mercedes driver secured his maiden Drivers’ Championship after finishing third in the 71-lap race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City.
Antonelli entered the race needing only a ninth-place finish to guarantee the championship, regardless of the results of his closest rivals, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes teammate George Russell.
Starting from fourth position, the young Italian delivered a composed performance despite a dramatic race featuring crashes, safety car interruptions and a red-flag stoppage.
He eventually crossed the finish line in third place behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who claimed victory, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who finished second.
At 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli becomes the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history, breaking the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title at 23 years and 133 days in 2010.
His achievement also makes him the first Italian driver to win the Formula 1 world championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year wait for Italy.
Following the historic achievement, an emotional Antonelli expressed gratitude to Mercedes, his family and everyone who supported his journey.
He described the moment as one that would remain with him forever, acknowledging the team’s contribution to his success.
The championship marks a remarkable achievement in only his second season in Formula 1 and confirms his place among the sport’s history-makers.
With four races still remaining in the 2026 season, Antonelli has already secured the biggest prize in motorsport, while attention now turns to the remaining races and the battle for the constructors’ championship.
